Rocío San Miguel: Venezuelan rights activist detained over alleged plot
Venezuelan authorities have officially acknowledged the arrest of Rocío San Miguel, a prominent human rights activist. San Miguel, known for her outspoken criticism of President Nicolás Maduro’s government, was arrested on Friday and transported to an undisclosed location.
On Sunday, the prosecutor general, a close associate of President Maduro, accused San Miguel of involvement in an alleged assassination plot against the president. However, the government has released minimal information regarding the specifics of the alleged plot.
Rocío San Miguel, aged 57, is renowned as an expert in defence matters and heads the NGO Control Ciudadano, which advocates for civilian oversight of Venezuela’s armed forces. Concerns were raised by rights activists on Friday when San Miguel was detained by intelligence personnel at Simón Bolívar International Airport, near Caracas, the capital.
Her legal representative stated that San Miguel had not been informed of her whereabouts or the charges, if any, brought against her. It took two days for Prosecutor-General Tarek William Saab to officially confirm her arrest.
