El Salvador’s President Bukele claims election victory

President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, recognised for his efforts in combating gangs in the Central American nation, claims to have been re-elected. Taking to social media, the 42-year-old said he has won 85% of the vote, although official confirmation is pending.

The constitutional court allowed Bukele to seek a second term, and his popularity has surged due to his decisive actions against crime, significantly improving the country’s security landscape. El Salvador has transitioned from being one of the world’s most violent nations to one of the safest in Latin America under his leadership.

Despite his popularity, President Bukele remains a controversial figure, with human rights groups reporting thousands of arbitrary arrests during his anti-gang initiatives.
