Two million could see energy cut off this winter, charity warns

New research indicates that two million people may face their gas and electricity being cut off this winter due to financial constraints, according to Citizens Advice.

The charity warns that being without power won’t be a one-time occurrence for many, and a separate report highlights widespread poverty in the UK.

The government asserts it is investing billions to support households in need.

The survey commissioned by Citizens Advice reveals that in 2023, around 1.7 million people disconnected from their prepayment meters monthly.

Of those, approximately 800,000 experienced over 24 hours without power, unable to afford top-ups for necessities like showers and hot meals.

The findings are based on responses from over 4,300 adults, reflecting the charity’s on-the-ground observations.
