The next instalment in the Battlefield franchise will have ‘the most realistic destruction effects’ ever, according to a job listing.
After the poor reception to Battlefield 2042, the first person shooter series underwent a shake-up behind the scenes and in recent months has become one of gaming’s long list of, at least partially, redeemed games.
Back in 2021, just after the game’s release, EA restructured development on the Battlefield franchise – which included studio reshuffles and plans to create a ‘connected Battlefield universe’.
Nothing has been revealed about any of this yet but a new job listing suggests they’re finally doing what fans have been demanding for years: focusing on destruction.
Ripple Effect, previously known as DICE LA, has now taken the lead on the franchise and a new job listing for a VFX Director at the studio (as spotted by Tech4Gamers) has provided some insight into the project’s ambitions – because for some reason developers think the general public can’t see job listings and are often far more candid in those then they are in most press interviews.
According to the listing, Ripple Effect is ‘looking for a Senior 3D Artist like you to help us create the most realistic and exciting destruction effects in the industry’.
Destruction has been a trademark feature of Battlefield since 2008’s Battlefield: Bad Company, but this aspect has taken a backseat in more recent games – much to many fan’s disappointment.
While this might suggest a return to its roots, EA has a history of making bold claims about Battlefield’s destruction in its marketing for the series. Prior to Battlefield 2042, a blog post said it would have ‘game-changing destruction’ [narrator’s voice: it didn’t], so it’s perhaps best to take this with a pinch of salt for now.
In August last year, EA CEO Andrew Wilson hinted at a ‘reimagination’ of the Battlefield series with a ‘truly connected ecosystem’ – suggesting they may have been inspired by Activision’s Call Of Duty integration with Warzone.
It’s also implied there are multiple Battlefield games currently in development, with plans having changed rapidly following 2042’s initial failure and then again after its recent resurrection.

Exactly what Ripple Effect is developing is unclear, but EA has previously talked about them working on an ‘entirely new Battlefield experience’ which will ‘complement and build upon the series’ foundations’.
They’ve also teamed up with new studio Ridgeline Games to develop the single-player campaign, which Battlefield 2042 didn’t have.
How any of this is going to pan out, as EA’s hopes and expectations for the franchise evolve, is a mystery, as is when they’ll officially announce the first new game.
