Transport for London is hoping to try a new method to remove eerie ‘ghost marks’ left on the walls of Elizabeth Line tube stations by previous commuters.
Despite vigorous cleaning, the ‘ghost’ marks won’t budge – so TFL has put vinyl covers with the Elizabeth Line fabric pattern on the wall.
After concerns were raised by commuters to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, he replied: ‘TFL is exploring new ways to clean the walls behind seating at some of its Elizabeth line stations to try to remove any marks and protect the walls in future.’
It’s unclear if these makeshift vinyl covers will work in the future, but they’re sure to be a colourful sight for commuters.
In November, photos at Tottenham Court Road showed grey outlines of people left by travellers sitting on benches.
The marks also appear at Liverpool Street, with the station’s white walls appearing to be stained by commuters’ coats and heads.

The Elizabeth Line, named after the late Queen Elizabeth II, opened on May 24, 2022 – 13 years after construction on the line began in 2009.
The 41-stop route now hosts 204 million passenger journeys per year, costing the Government around £18.9 billion.

And the new line has crowned a new ‘busiest rail station in the UK’ – knocking Waterloo off of the pedestal.
The Elizabeth line has caused Liverpool Street to snag the top spot with 80.4 million passengers — 50 million more than last year.
It’s likely the same reason why Paddington, another hub the the Elizabeth line, was the second busiest in the UK, with 59.2 million people passing through it.
