Nintendo Direct and State Of Play in next few weeks but ‘could be disappointing’ says rumour

PlayStation and Nintendo are both planning preview showcases within the next month or two, but they may not be what fans are hoping for.

2024 has only started but already we’ve had a revelation-filled preview trailer from Sony and confirmation of an Xbox Developer_Direct next week (and rumours of some potentially major announcements).

Now we have suggestions of both a Nintendo Direct and Sony’s equivalent with a new State of Play, but what they’ll actually cover is still unknown.

The first Nintendo Direct of 2023 was on February 8 and according to rumourmonger Jeff Grubb this year’s is set to be around the same time, with the first State of Play in ‘the next few weeks’.

That is pretty much what you’d expect, and as Grubb says in his latest video: ‘you can always count on a Nintendo Direct in February’.

He offers no insight on what might discussed and it’s not surprising he wouldn’t want to stick his neck out, as it’s either going to be a rundown of the already announced games in their rather limited 2023 schedule or the reveal of their next gen console.

Nothing so far indicates they’re getting ready to do that quite yet, so it’s probably the less exciting first option.

Speaking of less exciting, Grubb commented, ’State of Plays are always weird, man. You always get the sense that these are just contractual obligations. They just told a company that they’d give them free marketing, so they fill a need and have to do it. So, they could be disappointing.’

That is certainly how many of them come across, with even Sony’s summer showcase proving disappointingly lacklustre.

The idea that publishers have paid for marketing space is most evident in other State of Plays, such as the one last February that focused on Suicide Squad… in a showcase so bad the game ended up being delayed by a year.

It’s out on February 2 though, so there’s a good chance it’ll already be out by the time the new State of Play hits.

What the new one would feature isn’t too hard to guess, as it’d likely be a similar line-up to the preview trailer, especially as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
