A major stretch of the M6 has been closed after a lorry struck a bridge, spilling its load all over the carriageway.
National Highways revealed the southbound stretch between junction 17, Sandbach, and junction 16, Crewe, in Cheshire, had been stopped just before 5.30am. It said the lorry’s load was spilt all over the lanes.
Images from the scene showed a lorry nestled under the bridge. Queues were building up at the scene.
A National Highways spokesman said: “The M6 in Cheshire is closed in southbound between J17 (Sandbach) and J16 (Crewe) due to a collision involving a lorry which has struck a bridge support. Emergency services including the North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management. A lengthy clean-up and recovery progress will be ongoing throughout the morning.”
A diversion route is in place at the scene. It is marked out by a hollow circle symbol, says National Highways.
