Cassie is jealous of the life Abi has (Picture: ITV)
When Roy Cropper (David Neilson) needed to travel to another town to pick up a Christmas present for Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) in Coronation Street he was thwarted when his car wouldn’t start. Cassie (Claire Sweeney) promptly ‘borrowed’ a Porsche that was being serviced at the garage and took Roy off on his errand.
But when she got the Porsche back she discovered a huge scratch on it – which she subsequently blamed on Abi (Sally Carman) being careless with her tool trolley.
This incident sparked a chain of events for Abi, as she was forced to accept the blame while Cassie was offered a permanent place at the garage by Kevin (Michael Le Vell).
While Cassie’s approval rating was on the rise with Kevin, the same couldn’t have been said for his feelings towards Abi – especially when the Porsche’s owner refused to pay his bill, leaving Kevin suffering a financial loss all because of Abi’s apparent carelessness.

Claire Sweeney told us that there might be more to Cassie’s actions than simply saving her own skin – as she starts to move in on Abi’s entire life.
‘I think it’s exciting to play because I see elements of Single White Female, which is a film that I love,’ she said.
The tagline of the 1992 film was: ‘Allie’s new roommate is about to borrow a few things without asking. Her clothes. Her boyfriend. Her life.’
Claire explained the relevance.

‘Cassie just wants Abi’s life. Does she fancy Kevin? I don’t know. I think she just wants that structure of stability. She’s seen how Abi has sorted herself out.’
Abi, like Cassie, has had problems with drug addiction and Claire can certainly see parallels.
‘It’s interesting because Cassie wanting Abi’s life is not so far-fetched,’ she asserted. ‘It’s not like she’s looking at someone who has got a completely different life like Real Housewives or even looking at someone like Maria (Samia Longchambon) who’s never put a foot wrong. Abi is someone who basically has had her life.’
A few years ago, Abi was in a similar place to where Cassie is now (Picture: ITV)
But would Cassie go so far as to try to steal Abi’s husband? Apparently she would according to Claire.
‘You see so many similarities between Abi and Cassie,’ she insisted. ‘You can see why she believes she could have what Abi has got and even start to believe she has feelings for Kevin.’

One of Claire’s stated aims for her character in 2024 is, ‘To get a snog and a bit of lippie, that would be my new year’s wish for Cassie.’ Could Kevin be the lucky recipient of the snog? And what would that mean for his relationship with Abi?
Claire wasn’t revealing where the story could go next, but she insisted that however bad Cassie’s behaviour gets, there’s always a reason for it.

‘She does some awful things but I always try and find redeeming features and redeeming things with Cassie and reasons why she’s doing it,’ she said.
‘I am sure we haven’t seen the last of her unpredictable behaviour.’
