After two decades in the business, Britney Spears shocked fans as she declared she will ‘never return’ to the music industry.

Rumours had been bubbling that the Everytime singer was going to make an epic return by joining forces with hitmaker Charli XCX to record a new album.

It was reported Britney, 42, and Charli, 31, already had a host of ‘killer songs’ up their sleeves but were keeping things top secret for the time being.

However, the Toxic hitmaker has now slammed the album speculation as ‘trash’ and revealed that she is not planning to record new music – ever.

In true Britney fashion she opted to post a picture of the Italian Renaissance painting Salome Bearing the Head of St. John the Baptist for her message.

She wrote: ‘Just so we’re clear most of the news is trash !!! They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry !!!’

2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the icon bursting onto the music scene, with a string of hits making her the bestselling teenager of all time.

The Grammy winner first released her debut album in 1999, …Baby One More Time, and the follow-up album Oops!… I Did It Again the next year.

Despite saying she would never return, Britney then revealed she has been writing music since her conservatorship lifted.

Britney added: ‘When I write, I write for fun or I write for other people !!! For those of you who have read my book, there’s loads that you don’t know about me … I’ve written over 20 songs for other people the past two years !!!

‘I’m a ghostwriter and I honestly enjoy it that way !!!’

A ghostwriter in music is someone who writes songs for others to sing and it is fairly common for artists, especially those who don’t want to record music but enjoy writing.

Songwriting is a totally separate challenge to recording and singing, with many specialists making good careers solely as a ghostwriter for top hits.

She concluded her message with a dig at those questioning her book, as she added: ‘People are also saying MY BOOK WAS RELEASED WITHOUT MY APPROVAL ILLEGALLY and that’s far from the truth … have you read the news these days ??? I’m so LOVED and blessed !!!’

She recently partied with her ‘baby’ in a pool (Picture: Britney Spears/Instagram )

Britney certainly appeared to be having a lovely time recently as she partied in a swimming pool with a mystery man and her dog.

Two hours after dismissing music, she returned to Instagram and began to discuss the meaning of ‘time’ – yes, really.

‘For those who SEE BOTH SIDES !!!,’ the Hold Me Closer singer wrote. ‘Wise asses … here’s the benefits of time ⏰ !!!

‘What if the time machine theory was real 😳😳😳 ????  That would actually be so cool, right ???’

She shared a googled definition of time and as usual left us all absolutely baffled, never change Britney!
