Reality hit Paul (Picture: ITV)
It was an incredibly difficult day for Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) in Wednesday’s (January 3) episode of Coronation Street.
The beloved character, who has motor neurone disease, has been trying his best to remain strong since his diagnosis, but the events that occurred in tonight’s instalment changed his focus entirely.
The day started off bittersweet. Summer (Harriet Bibby) opened a parcel for Paul that turned out to be his voice talker apparatus. He got use to the device and was surprised the phrases and words sounded exactly like him.
Paul, Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) and Summer then decided to look at prices for a holiday.

A frustrated Billy highlighted that insurances prices are incredibly high because of Paul’s MND, and didn’t really know how to get around it.
Paul then told his family not to bother and in the pub, he was cheered up when David (Jack P Shepherd) arrived and decided to order some sangria.

David helped Paul back to the flat and asked if there was anything he could do before he left. Paul told David to leave, knowing assistant Moses would soon arrive.
Except he didn’t.
As time ticked by, Paul became desperate for the toilet. With Moses running late, Paul tried to move into his chair, but he fell and crashed to the floor.

Fortunately, it wasn’t long until Billy arrived, but he found Paul stressed out and embarrassed after being unable to wait any longer for the toilet.
When Moses arrived, he explained his journey got delayed due to a crash and was sorry for being so late. He highlighted that within the care sector, there isn’t enough carers for the amount of people that need looking after.

As Moses dashed off to see his next client, Billy returned and announced to Paul that he’s been put on indefinite leave. Billy thought this was good news – he could spend more time with Paul, and increase the chance of him being there if something went wrong – but it also made Paul realise that they’re getting closer to the time where he cannot do anything for himself.
That evening, during a chat with Todd (Gareth Pierce), Paul started talking about assisted dying again.

He spoke about wanting to make his own choices and thought today marked the start of the ‘end game’.
Todd tried to tell his friend that today was just a bad day, but all Paul could think about was the prospect of eventually losing complete control of his own body.
‘I need to get my ducks in a row, for when the time comes’, he said.
‘It won’t be long now’.
