A 23-year-old man is set to go on trial later this year after being charged with murdering a man helping a stranger on the roadside by driving into him.

Father-of-two Chris Marriott went to the aid of a woman he saw unconscious on the street in Burngreave, Sheffield, when a car ploughed into a crowd on College Close.

The incident last Wednesday killed Mr Marriott and injured several others, some who were taken to hospital.

Mr Marriott, a Christian, was described as a ‘Good Samaritan’ in reference to his selfless act.

In a tribute released by South Yorkshire police, the family of the 46-year-old described him as a ‘wonderful husband, dad, brother, uncle – and friend to many’.

Hassan Jhangur, 23, of Whiteways Road, Sheffield, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday morning for an initial hearing, having been charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder.

He is accused of attempting to kill Hasan Khan, Ambreen Jhangur, Nafeesa Jhangur, Riasat Khan and Alison Norris – a midwife who helped at the scene.

Jhangur appeared by video link from Doncaster prison.

No plea was entered but his counsel Richard Davies has indicated he will be pleading ‘not guilty’ which will mean that he will stand trial at the same court from July 15. The trial could last four weeks.

At the end of Tuesday’s hearing, which lasted only ten minutes, Judge Graham Reeds KC remanded Jhangur in custody to return to court for a plea hearing on March 25.

Mr Marriot’s family statement said: ‘The circumstances of his death, although tragic and unfathomable to us his family, show the sort of man he was – to go to help rather than to turn away.

‘Chris was also a man of faith who wanted others to also experience the joy he had found trusting in Jesus.

‘We take comfort in these most difficult of times in our belief that he is with his Lord and Saviour, while we mourn his loss.

‘We would urge anyone with any information to share this so that we can better understand the circumstances in which he died.’

He is survived by his wife Bryony and two young sons, aged eight and six.
