A group of cruel thugs launched a cowardly attack on a Santa Claus spreading cheer to excited youngsters over Christmas.

A volunteer Saint Nick was pelted with hard-boiled eggs while he was on his festive rounds and entertaining children in West Lothian on December 22.

The team behind the community sleigh were left furious at the incident and have called on locals to help them find the culprits who targeted Father Christmas.

The family-run Garage Whitburn have urged people to check their CCTV and dashcams in a bid to uncover the ‘mindless morons’.

Every year the garage spreads festive cheer around West Lothian when their Santa takes a tour in his specially adapted sleigh. But this year he came under attack during his rounds.

While he only sustained some bruising, it could have been much worse as one of the eggs had come ‘inches from Santa’s face.’ Police in Scotland are investigating the incident.

Garage owner Iain Robertson, said Father Christmas had been heading along the B7010 between Fauldhouse and Longridge at around 9pm on December 22 when the shocking incident occurred.

Iain said: ‘Sadly [the event] was somewhat spoiled by some mindless morons who ambushed the Santa-car as we headed home from Fauldhouse, by throwing missiles as we passed them on an unlit section of road.

‘Whilst there was no serious injury caused, there could have been much more serious consequences. Whoever the attackers were, and whatever the gripe they have against Santa and the Santa team, why don’t they man-up, and meet us face to face with their issues, and let us know what the problem is, rather than skulking in the shadows like cowards.

‘Despite the events of last night, I for one won’t be intimidated by a few faceless idiots, and look forward to next Christmas, when we do it all over again.’

The family-run business is often at the heart of its community in Whitburn, with an impressive float for gala days and Santa’s sleigh at Christmas.

Staff also provide resources, sponsorship and volunteer time to many community groups and won the overall 2021 National Garage Star Award after securing the Scottish regional trophy for the second year in a row in a competition organised by industry watchdog The Motor Ombudsman.

Iain continued: ‘We are a small family-run business. This Santa car was started many years ago as a wee thank you to all our customers. We work our usual day then do this in our spare time at night.

‘There are a lot more members of the team who make it work other than who you see smiling and waving at you, out travelling spreading Christmas cheer around the streets in the Santa car each cold night. We thank you for your support.’

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘On Friday, December 22, officers received a report of items being thrown at a vehicle on the B7010 near Fauldhouse. Enquiries are ongoing.’
