More heavy rain and snow to come as Storm Gerrit continues to wreak havoc

Storm Gerrit arrived with sound and fury yesterday, bringing severe winds, heavy rain and enough snow in Scotland to lead to the declaration of a major incident.

Things will calm down a bit today with nowhere near as many weather warnings around the country – but conditions will still be treacherous.

The Met Office predicts plenty of rain showers for swathes of the UK, which will turn to snow once again on the higher ground in northern Scotland.

That will be painful news to the thousands of Scots who are still waiting for their electricity to be restored after it was cut off by the storm.

Last night, the Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said some rural properties might be forced to hang on for 48 hours before they’re reconnected.

There were more than 200 flood alerts in effect across England, Scotland and Wales yesterday evening, and today’s rain is unlikely to help matters.

Throughout the day today, various showers will band together to hit all parts of the UK with greater intensity, causing problems on the roads.

Forecasters say a band of heavy rain will work its way up through Wales and the Midlands before heading back down south, soaking London and Kent before it reaches the English Channel this evening.

The Met Office website says: ‘The showers will be locally heavy and squally, perhaps with hail.’

Much of the country will be feeling the chill too, despite temperatures remaining mild especially in the south.

In the far north, temperatures will stay cold at around 6C to 8C, while they could reach into the teens towards the south coast.
