Chaos breaks out in supermarket after shoppers misread sign for ’35p Pringles’

Christmas Eve is already a chaotic time for supermarket shoppers and the poor souls who work to keep them happy.

Add to the mix an arguably misleading sign about one of the nation’s favourite festive snacks, and you’ve got a recipe for pandemonium.

That’s what happened at an Asda yesterday, when last-minute Christmas bargain hunters descended on a Pringles promotion in the centre of the store.

According to a tweet from social media user Funkolip, they’d been drawn in by a piece of paper which appeared – from a distance – to say tubes were only 35p.

Sharing a picture of the damaged display on X, formerly Twitter, she painted a picture of a supermarket trip that looked more like a scene from Dawn of the Dead.

‘They were fighting & clamoring like old school black Friday,’ she wrote.

‘People put whole crates on their trolley.’

The user said the supermarket had even been forced to make announcements over the tannoy system, reminding shoppers that the Pringles tubes were actually going for the perfectly normal price of £1.85.

What the piece of paper had, in fact, been saying was that each purchase of a tube would put 35p in the buyer’s Asda Rewards Cashpot – the store’s equivalent of Nectar at Sainsbury’s or a Tesco Clubcard.

But the clarification was either unheard or unheeded by many of those in the shop, with customer services reportedly ‘overrun’ by incensed individuals.

According to Funkolip, the madness only came to an end when one man declared he’d had enough and tore the paper off the display.

The sign mishap isn’t the only thing this Christmas that has been winding up supermarket customers.

Several have also been complaining on social media about the often bizarre substitutions shops have made in their online deliveries – including a packet of ham slices in place of a full ham joint.
