Manchester United star Christian Eriksen has sent support and advice to Tom Lockyer after the Luton Town captain suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch last Saturday.

In an off the ball incident with no-one around him, Lockyer collapsed in the 55th minute of Luton’s Premier League match at Bournemouth, which was later abandoned.

The Hatters skipper received immediate medical attention on the pitch before being taken to hospital, with his club later announcing that the 29-year-old had suffered a cardiac arrest but was in a ‘stable’ condition.

Lockyer had also collapsed on the pitch back in May’s Championship Play-Off final against Coventry at Wembley.

In their latest update on the defender, Luton said on Sunday: ‘Tom is still undergoing tests and scans, and is awaiting the results before the next steps for his recovery are determined.’

For many, the concerning scenes at the Vitality Stadium will have brought back memories of Euro 2020, where Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s group game against Finland.

The midfielder was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator device and returned to football eight months later.

‘Well first of all, I hope he [Lockyer] is okay,’ Eriksen told Betfred.

‘I’ve read and seen what’s happened and I hope he’s okay, takes his time, is in a healthy way and his family are there to support him. I cross my fingers that he’s fine.

‘My advice to him would be to make the best decision you can. Listen to the doctors and if [they] tell you to maybe do something else then respect that.

‘There’s nothing that’s going to hold you back, but in the end it all depends on how he’s feeling and what the doctors are saying. He has to make the decision with his family on what’s next, but he should take his time and focus on himself.’

After his collapse at Wembley, Welsh international Lockyer had surgery to fix an atrial fibrillation and returned in time for the start of the new season – Luton’s first in the Premier League.
