Want to know the best spots to eat in London? Then ask the people who know the city’s streets best — London cab drivers.
They know the places where the hype never dies and the hidden gems that are waiting to be discovered.
Whatever the cuisine you desire, they will have an option for you.
And now, more than 300 London black cab drivers have taken part in a survey conducted by FREENOW to find the top places to eat some good grub in the city. With years of knowledge sitting in their back seats, they are in know about London’s culinary scene.
So, want new places to add to your list? Here are their top picks.
Best fish & chips: The Seashell of Lisson Grove
For the best fish and chip, London cabbies recommend The Seashell of Lisson Grove, in West London. Open for more than 60 years, the portions are generous and delicious.
Scott H., a black cab driver from London, said: ‘I can’t tell you how many visitors I’ve dropped off at the Seashell of Lisson Grove. I’ve discovered some incredible local spots, but this has been my go-to recommendation for fish and chips.
‘Few places can give you the seaside chippy experience we all crave, like the Seashell. Easily the best fish and chips in London and somewhere that is always worth the journey, no matter where you’ve come from.’
Best pie and mash: Manzes Pie & Mash
A fan of pie and mash? Well, the East London shop Manzes Pie & Mash has been voted best. A celebration of the rich culinary history of London, it’s an authentic taste of the city.
John H., a black cab driver from London, said of the establishment: ‘Manze’s has embodied the heart and the soul of East London for more than 100 years. I’ve been going to Manzes since I was a kid and I’ll still be there as an old man.
‘George, the owner, is old-school and has been running the place since he took over from his parents in the 80s. No matter how far away, a run to Manze’s will bring back some amazing memories when I treat myself to a proper pie and mash. You might even be lucky enough to run into David Beckham on one of his London visits if you’re there as much as me.’
Best Sunday roast: Toby Carvery Bromley
Finding a good Sunday roast can be difficult amongst the wide choice in the city, but the cabbies believe the the best to be Toby Carvery in Bromley.
Best full English breakfast: Regency Cafe
Named after the street it’s located on, the Regency Cafe has the best full English, according to taxi drivers. The café has an art-deco design and also includes photos of Tottenham Hotspur players.
It’s basic set breakfast costs just £6.95, while additions like black pudding or hash browns will cost an additional £1.20.
Most diverse food spot: Borough Market
Already a favourite among those who live and visit the city, the cabbies also highly rate Borough Market.
Filled with traders, food stalls and more, it’s one of the top foodie attractions in London. From fruit and veg stalls to pulled pork sandwiches at The Black Pig, make sure you go on an empty stomach.
