Omid Scobie’s Endgame names second ‘royal racist’ but left out of English version | Royal | News | Express.co.uk

Omid Scobie’s latest book Endgame refers to two senior royals who made comments about Prince Archie’s skin colour, however they are not named in the English version.

Copies of Omid Scobie’s newest royal book Endgame have caused a stir as a version published in the Netherlands appears to have named two members of the Royal Family accused of making racist comments about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s then-unborn son.

The English version of the book, published yesterday, revealed that two senior royals made remarks about Prince Archie’s skin colour while Meghan was still pregnant – but they were not named. However, a paragraph in the Dutch preview edition seemed to name both people concerned. The publishers were quick to pull the copies from the shelves.

Yesterday it emerged that one person had been named, but upon closer inspection of the book the Dutch version actually names both royals.

In the English version Mr Scobie has said he is aware of the identity of the two individuals but has been prohibited by law from publishing the information in the UK.

In a subseqent statement the author also insisted that no edition of his book named the people concerned and said the Dutch edition is a publishing error.

During their interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sensationally revealed that conversations had been had in royal circles about what colour Archie’s skin would be when he was born.

Mr Scobie writes in Endgame that there were two royals behind the conversation, and one paragraph of the Dutch version seems to name both royals. This entire passage has been omitted from the English copy, with sales of the book in the Netherlands now “temporarily” on hold.

Meghan and King Charles are known to have communicated via letter about the incident, with Endgame publishing details of these conversations.

But in the Dutch version an extra part is added, which reads: “it was revealed that XXX and XXX took part in such conversations about Archie.”

When referring to the letters it also states: “But in those private letters an identity was revealed and confirmed.”

A Dutch journalist spotted the passage and posted on social media that it must be removed, writing: “NL (Netherlands) version ‘Endgame’ must be withdrawn from sale, says Dutch publisher at request of the US agent.

“A number of passages have sparked debate, may not have been accurately presented. This seems to concern also the accusation against XXX (name redacted), about Archie’s skin color (sic).”

Dutch publishers Xander, who published Endgame in the Netherlands, said in a statement: “[We are] temporarily withdrawing the book by Omid Scobie from sale. An error occurred in the Dutch translation and is currently being rectified.”

Mr Scobie has stated he is not responsible for the mistake, telling Dutch chat show RTL Boulevard: “The book is in several languages, and unfortunately I do not speak Dutch.

“But if there are translation errors, I’m sure the publishers will have it under control. I wrote and edited the English version. There’s never been a version I’ve produced which has names in it.”

The accusations first came to light during the Sussex interview with Oprah, when Meghan said: “In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time . . . so we have in tandem the conversation of ‘He won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.“

When asked if she would name the individual who had made the comments, she responded: “I think that would be very damaging to them.”
