‘I believe Prince William when he says racism “isn’t part of our family”‘

What do you think about the revelations in the book? (Credits: PA)

In today’s MetroTalk, a reader shares their view on the ‘royal racist’ controversy – after names of the were leaked in a dutch translation of Omid Scobie’s book.

Unlike Meghan Markle, in the reader’s experience being from a mixed heritage family, speculating about the baby’s colour before its birth isn’t automatically considered racist.

Meanwhile, what do you think about the claim that King Charles is ‘pampered’ and throws temper tantrums? Well, some readers aren’t exactly surprised.

Read on to see what readers think about this issue, among others.

‘It’s not racist to ask about the colour of a due baby.’

Further to the supposed ‘royal racist’ named in the Dutch version of Omid Scobie’s book Endgame (Metro, Wed).

It’s not racist to ask about the colour of a due baby – which is what prompted the allegation after Harry and Meghan revealed they were asked just that ahead of Archie’s birth.

I’m part of a mixed-heritage, blended family and we wonder aloud about the colour of newborn children.

While the Royal Family may have many issues, racism as William once said, ‘isn’t part of our family’ and I believe him.

However, Meghan, understandably from the US, where, until relatively recently, troops escorted black pupils to school, wouldn’t see the nuance of the discussion on the colour of her child. I get that. Andrew Edwards, Islington

While one always has to take these royal exposés with a substantial pinch of salt, I am, however, inclined to believe King Charles has ‘temper tantrums’ if his pyjamas aren’t pressed.

I mean, who doesn’t remember fountain pen-gate, when he threw a strop after one leaked while he was signing a visitors’ book at Hillsborough Castle? Paddy, West Sussex.

Should we return the Elgin Marbles? (Credits: PA)

As a keen enthusiast of all things Greek, I am profoundly distressed by Rishi Sunak’s cancellation of a prearranged meeting with Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a row over the Elgin Marbles.

On Sunday’s Laura Kuenssberg programme I, along with many others, I am sure, was most impressed by the courteous and impressive demeanour of Mr Mitsotakis, speaking of course in perfect English.

Britain’s reputation abroad has plummeted catastrophically in recent years due to Brexit and the hysterical xenophobia parroted by some of our politicians along with organs of the press. In his new ‘Mr Tough’ guise, Sunak looks just pathetic.

As it happens, I think we certainly ought to return the Elgin Marbles, along with other artefacts taken by Britons in our imperial past. Andrew McLuskey, Middlesex

Isn’t it time we gave the Elgin Marbles back to Greece? Why is it such a big deal – they don’t belong to us so why not spread a little peace and ship them back. M Neville, Sheffield

‘After cigarettes – they’ll ban alcohol’

Don’t smoke, don’t stress? (Credits: Getty Images)

Not sure why so many people like Robert (MetroTalk, Wed) get so stressed about others smoking. If you don’t like smoking don’t smoke.

If the argument is about the financial drain of smokers on the NHS, well, they pay for themselves in taxes/duty.

People need to remember that these do-gooders will move on to alcohol once smoking is banned. Joe, London

Ryan Cooper’s argument (MetroTalk, Mon) that people should be taught where the boundaries of permitted speech at work lie so as not to cause unintentional offence may be well-intentioned.

What do you think? (Picture: Metro.co.uk)

‘You are offending me – but you just won’t listen’

However, a large proportion of the population will never accept the validity of ‘you are offending me’ as a means of shutting them up; or even the entire nebulous concept of ‘being offended’.

They, then, for a quiet life or for fear of losing their jobs, will just opt to interact robotically, when strictly necessary, with anyone outside a trusted small circle.

This can’t be good for productivity or the work experience of the majority. Jonathan Bagley, Todmorden

‘Come on, Lib Dems – step up to the plate’

Who else is there? (Picture: Carl Court/Getty Images)

Can somebody please explain to me what on earth has happened to the Liberal Democrats? Why does it have to be like this, where we have no choice but to pick one from the same old two – Labour or the Tories, who are both awful?

Come on, Lib Dems – step up to the plate. You can’t hide forever! There must be thousands of floating voters out there who, like me, have no idea what the party stands for, with all that’s going on in this mad world. Steve, Sutton

Neil Dance (MetroTalk, Wed) wonders why it takes so long to process asylum seekers compared with other immigrants.

He might like to think that those who come via legal routes will have documentation. Asylum seekers often do not have any documents. Kate, Manchester

Regarding Nancy Astor becoming Britain’s first woman MP (Metro, Tue). I think you will find Countess Markievicz (my great aunt) was the first elected female MP.

[Markievicz didn’t take her seat at Westminster because it was against the policy of Sinn Fein, of which she was a member.] Best wishes for the festive season. Ed Rosenthal, via email
