Today’s news summary – Paper Talk: Tributes paid to Terry Venables
Monday’s newspapers pay tribute to former England manager Terry Venables, who died at the age of 80 over the weekend.
‘The Great Showman’
The Daily Mirror describes the former England, Tottenham, Leeds and Barcelona manager as “The Great Showman” and describes him as being a man of many talents.
The Daily Star says the legendary Euro 1996 manager was best known for his fascinating managerial career in the 1980s and 1990s, but the former England boss’ playing career was equally interesting and cruelly cut short.
The Sun leads on tributes from football greats, who share their stories and memories of Venables, who led England to the 1996 European Championship semi-finals on home soil. Three Lions legend Paul Gascoigne is mentioned on the front of the Sun, with the tabloid mentioning an image he posted on social media of Venables with a cup of tea alongside the message: “such a sad day, cheers boss.”
Israel-Hamas hopes
The Guardian’s front page leads on hopes in the US that the truce between Israel and Hamas could be extended – but Israel has indicated its campaign against Hamas is far from over.
The Financial Times reports that the Qatari PM has told the paper that more than 40 other women and children are being kept captive in Gaza who are not believed to be held by Hamas. He said the truce could be extended if Hamas is able to use the pause to locate those hostages.
The Times focuses on the release of the American-Israeli hostage Avigail Idan, 4 – whose parents were both killed by Hamas. The front page also splashes on a march against antisemitism in central London, which was attended by tens of thousands of people.
The Daily Mail also features an image of the demonstration in the capital on Sunday. The paper’s headline reports: “No war crimes, no angry chants, just solidarity with UK’s fearful Jews.”
The Daily Telegraph’s top story reports on a migrant deal between Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman. The paper has seen a copy of a plan to cut migration which allies of Braverman say was agreed with PM Sunak as he sought Braverman’s support during the Tory Party leadership contest last year. Downing Street denies it was a deal.
