Matty Healy has called Kanye West his ‘hero’ before being booed by fans at his own concert.
The 1975 were performing a show at Madison Square Garden in New York on Wednesday night when he launched into a rant reported to have lasted minutes.
Taking aim, he first expressed his frustration at the fact the band is yet to have been nominated for a Grammy.
‘The fact that we didn’t get nominated for a Grammy is a f**king outrage,’ he told the crowd.
‘The reason people don’t say that is because it’s not a very tasteful thing to say…but I am way past tasteful.’
He then questioned whether those who voted on the awards were ‘mental’ for the apparent oversight, as captured in several videos shared online.
The frontman, 34,then went on to mention two of the band’s albums, 2016’s I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It and 2018’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, before insisting that their 2022 song About You deserved a nod.
As he took a slurp of his drink and held a lit cigarette in another, he continued: ‘I mean, I don’t really care that much but it just winds me up.’
He then mentioned Kanye, 46, who has also called out the Recording Academy in the past.
‘I’m not being self-celebratory, but Kanye is one of my heroes,’ he shared.

‘You know what? You’ve got to f***king believe in yourself.’
However his comments clearly riled up many, who then began to boo him.
Matty went on: ‘I believe that’s an awkward hero to have right now, I understand that…but separate the antisemitism. Just think about the self-belief.’
Kanye, who legally changed his name to Ye two years ago, has made numerous anti-Semitic statements in the past.

In November 2022, he tweeted in a now-deleted post he was ‘going death con 3 ON JEWISH PEOPLE’ before claiming he wasn’t ‘anti-semitic because black people are actually Jew also’.
He was also slammed for the inclusion of a ‘White Lives Matter’ T-shirt in his fashion line at Paris Fashion Week last year.
In the aftermath Kanye has been condemned by many public and political figures, as well as organisations that represent Jewish communities.
He has also lost brand deals with Balenciaga, Adidas and Gap.
