WSL: Roundup of the weekend’s Super League action
Some big Super League games were in action this weekend with Arsenal thumping Leicester, and Manchester City beaten in a shock upset.
Arsenal find ruthless streak
Arsenal 6-2 Leicester
It’s only early into the season but one consistent comment about Arsenal has been about their lack of clinical finishing.
It’s not that their season is off to a bad start, it’s just been a bit unconvincing at times, and before Sunday’s game, they had a shot-to-goal conversion rate of just 14%. The game against Leicester saw the Gunners go 2-0 down but by the second half, they displayed their ruthlessness, slicing the defence with four goals in 12 minutes. Two more goals would be added – thanks to Stina Blackstenius and Lina Hurtig. The team can take extra pride in the fact six different names got on the scoresheet.
It was heartbreak for Leicester who were 2-0 at the break, but their defence crumbled as Arsenal’s attacking threat persisted.
Arsenal are now second in the table, whilst Leicester are 7th.
Brighton cause upset at City
Brighton 1-0 Manchester City
Brighton caused a massive upset on Manchester City soil with a 1-0 win over the home team. It’s the first time Brighton have beaten City in the league and the first time they had taken points off of them since September 2020. “Manchester City’s bid for the WSL title seems to be already unravelling,” writes the BBC, who says the team could not find their clinical edge.
Chelsea on top
Chelsea 3-0 Everton
Emma Hayes’ time at Chelsea is coming to an end – the manager announced she’s off at the end of the season (many predict she’ll be appointed the new USWNT manager).
But her beloved Chelsea put in a convincing win over a disorganised Everton, putting them three points clear of second-place Arsenal.
It’s been a tough week for Everton, which included a 7-0 defeat to Man Utd in the Continental League Cup.
