Woman asks sister to leave her engagement party for ‘stealing all the attention’

A 25-year-old woman has been criticised for asking her sister to leave her engagement party, after accusing her of stealing the limelight.

The recently-engaged woman took to Reddit to explain the situation, to ask if she was in the wrong.

She revealed that she recently got engaged to her partner, 30-year-old Ben, and decided to throw a party so their families could properly ‘get to know each other.’

However, the woman’s 31-year-old sister Avery (who she dubs as the ‘favourite in the family’) arrived back home from travelling Asia, Africa, and the Middle East the week before the event, so would be in attendance too.

The poster says: ‘Avery has always had the spotlight. Even in my high school graduation (she wasn’t even there), everyone mentioned how amazing she was (because we went to the same school) and how I had filled in her footsteps. Wherever she goes, she just makes everyone else disappear.’

Before the party, the woman had a chat with Avery explaining how important the party was and asking her sister to ‘for once, let the day be about her’.

But the post continues: ‘During the party, everyone from my side of the family just briefly saw us and went to Avery to ask her about her adventures in Uganda or Yemen. In just half an hour, she had the whole family around her.

‘I called her out and said she needed to try and not take the spotlight once more. She said I was being ridiculous and it was not her fault she had a life that people wanted to know about. I told her she could either go back inside and keep a low profile for the rest of the night or leave the party and talk about herself as much as she pleased.’

The sisters have since fallen out with Avery calling her sibling ‘jealous and pathetic’ – and it’s safe to say that Reddit agrees the poster is in the wrong.

Someone replied: ‘Your sister isn’t the problem here; the people who you feel were ignoring you are the actual issue.’

While another agreed, saying: ‘You’re insecure and jealous of your sister simply existing. She didn’t summon people over to her. She didn’t do anything to steal attention. She was there for your party and other people were interested in her. So that’s her fault? Seriously?’

Someone else chipped in: ‘Please don’t make the rest of your wedding planning about how much attention you get as well. Parties are for people to see each other and talk to each and enjoy each other’s company.

‘It was unrealistic to think people would only talk to you and only about your engagement all night. You need to get to the root of your issues with your sister and work through them – this is entirely a “you” problem.’
