Girls Aloud ‘reunite in honour of Sarah Harding’ with ‘new music recorded’

It’s been reported that Girls Aloud have finally reunited after more than 10 years, with new music in the pipeline, ‘in honour’ of late bandmate Sarah Harding.

Cheryl Tweedy, 40, Nadine Coyle, Nadine Coyle, 38, Kimberley Walsh, 41, and Nicola Roberts, 38, ruled the charts in the early 2000s alongside Harding after they were formed on Pop Stars: The Rivals in 2002.

Their first number one song came that Christmas with debut single Sound of the Underground, and other hits including Jump, Love Machine, I’ll Stand by You, Call the Shots and The Promise followed before they split in March 2013.

Tragically, Harding died of breast cancer at the age of 39 in September 2021, with the girls reuniting to support charitable fundraising in her name.

Now though, it looks as though Girls Aloud fans have got the musical reunion they’d been hoping for too, after a source claimed that the foursome had secretly reunited to shoot the music video for their first single in 11 years at a North London studio.

The new song is also said to be dedicated to Harding, and the theme for the video is said to see them play ‘superhero characters complete with Wonder Woman-style costumes and capes’.

‘This has been one of the best-kept secrets in pop, but it’s actually happening now,’ a music insider told The Sun.

‘The girls really came back together as friends to rally around when Sarah died, and it repaired some of the old rifts and put things into perspective.

‘Suddenly the reunion which had seemed totally impossible for so long just felt a totally natural thing to do — in Sarah’s honour.’

Alongside this, the source also claimed that with a single and video completed, there are also plans for a full album of new music and a ‘huge’ reunion tour in 2024.

Nicola, Nadine, Kimberely and Cheryl are said to be ‘very excited to be back working together, even if there is a bittersweet element to it’ – and they promise that there will ‘always be nods to Sarah’s contribution to the group’ in what they have planned.

Together, Girls Aloud achieved a massive 21 top 10 UK singles – which included four number one songs – as well as netting five Brit Award nominations.

Since their split a decade ago, Cheryl has notched up five solo number ones with the likes of Fight For This Love and Call My Name, as well a stint as a judge on The X Factor.

Kimberley has trod the boards and been a finalist on Strictly Come Dancing, while Harding also dipped her toes in acting with St Trinian’s and reality TV with Celebrity Big Brother, which she won in 2017.

Nadine and Nicola have both also released their own music, with Nadine taking part on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2019 and Nicola won the first series of The Masked Singer UK as Queen Bee in 2020.

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Cheryl Tweedy, Kimberley Walsh, Nadine Coyle and Nicola Roberts for comment.
