The police may be satisfied that Sam Dingle (James Hooton) wasn’t responsible for the recent death of rapist Craig Reed (Ben Addis) in Emmerdale, but the repercussions continue to play out across the village.
Bernice (Samantha Giles) filled David (Matthew Wolfenden) in on the gossip when she visited the shop in Tuesday (November 7)’s episode. She told him that Lydia (Karen Blick) had checked into the B&B the previous night, but had since left to stay at Home Farm.
’One of the local hillbillies is in the frame for murder, his missis moves out of the homestead,’ she added. ‘Coincidence? I don’t think so.’
Unluckily for Bernice another of the ‘local hillbillies’ and the scariest one, Cain (Jeff Hordley), had just walked in. He firmly told Bernice and David that Sam was off the hook as the official verdict was accidental death.

Sam may be off the hook as far as the law is concerned, but things are far from back to normal between him and Lydia. Will (Dean Andrews) turned up at the Dingles’ to collect some of Lydia’s belongings because he and Kim (Claire King) had offered her a place to stay while she thought about what she wanted to do next.
Sam was just desperate to talk to her and for her to come home, but she was refusing to answer her phone to him. Cain thought he should go and see her.
‘I’ve already handled things badly enough as it is,’ Sam replied. He knew that his violent actions in going after Craig and beating him up had made things much worse for Lydia.

‘I’ve got this horrible feeling she’s left me for good,’ he told Cain and Samson (Sam Hall). Cain tried to reassure him that Lydia would soon calm down and ‘get some perspective.’
Sam knew that his actions had made Lydia question what kind of man she was married to. ‘It’s about her and me – what she thinks I’m capable of,’ he said. ‘She reckons I’ve made everything worse for her and I can’t be trusted. I don’t think she can see past it.’

When Samson saw Will in the village later he questioned him about Lydia, accusing him of stopping Sam from seeing her. Will said that Lydia needed time and space and Sam was just going to have to respect her wishes.

‘There’s a question mark as to whether Sam and Lydia can prevail and get back to any sense of normality,’ James Hooton told us. ‘But you would hope that their bond and strength as a couple is enough to enable that to happen over time.
‘They are a strong family unit and despite the perils and problems that come into their lives I think their love is what binds them together. Essentially we hope that love prevails over time.’
