Massive crocodile orgy in Australia triggered by helicopters flying overhead
A low-flying helicopter accidentally triggered a giant crocodile orgy after more than 3,000 reptiles found themselves powerfully aroused by the sound of the whirling blades.
The erotic scenes took place at the Koorana Crocodile Farm in Central Queensland, which often sees low-flying Chinook helicopters fly overhead.
But somewhere along the line the wires got crossed, and the crocodiles now seem to associate the sound of the helicopter blades with mating season.
John Lever, owner of the Karoona Farm, told ABC Far North that a particularly low-flying helicopter had a rousing effect on the animals.

‘We had a big Chinook that came down low because the guys wanted to take some pictures of the crocodiles,’ said Lever. ‘They were hanging out the door … and of course, Chinooks have got a big thump, thump, thump, like that.’
‘All of the big males got up and roared and bellowed up at the sky, and then after the helicopters left they mated like mad.’
Although the exact reason for the helicopters’ aphrodisiac quality is still not fully understood, experts have theorised that the sound of the blades may sound like thunderstorms to the crocodiles.
October and November are the spring months in Australia – and the ideal mating season for crocodiles.
Speaking to Live Science, expert Mark O’Shea said: ’Usually, mating is a seasonal thing because [crocodiles] want to coincide with the best time to lay their eggs in a burrow or nest.’
The Chinook’s blades may have changed the biometric pressure of the area, mimicking a storm.
And coupled with the aircraft’s roar and thumping vibrations, it might have triggered the male beasts to start producing more offspring.
But regardless of whether the helicopter inadvertently started the orgy, it surely won’t be finishing it. As Australia heads into its wet season, the conditions are ripe for plenty more crocodile shenanigans over the coming months.
‘We’ve had a lovely warm winter,’ Lever added. ‘We’ve actually had a thunderstorm already, which is an aphrodisiac for a croc – it really turns them on … and we’ve had some rain. So, it’s on.’
Up to 3,000 crocs got involved in the reptilian sex party.
