Erik ten Hag makes surprise transfer claim in response to Sir Jim Ratcliffe investment

Erik ten Hag insists he is not thinking about strengthening his Manchester United squad in the January transfer window despite reports of an imminent cash injection.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to commit $300m (£245m) from his multibillion pound fortune to United’s ageing infrastructure as part of a deal to acquire a 25% stake that will be unveiled this month.

The British billionaire is set to have an offer worth in the region of £1.3billion for a 25 per cent stake in the club accepted by the United board when they meet on Thursday to discuss the offer.

Ten Hag has already presided over a transfer spend in excess of £400m following his arrival from Ajax just over 18 months ago but his squad still appears to have some gaping holes.

A dismal run of form continued in midweek with a 3-0 loss against a second string Newcastle side in the Carabao Cup.

A raft of injuries has hardly helped Ten Hag’s cause this season but it appears unlikely that he will be permitted to strengthen his squad significantly when the window reopens.

Ten Hag, however, insists he will not be frustrated if his hands are tied in January and is confident he has the right players at his disposal to mastermind a return to form.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Fulham, he said: I’ have a good squad. I’m convinced about the players in the dressing room.

‘We saw these players last year, they can do a lot better, but that’s up to me to let them play better.

‘I have to take the responsibility to make them play better and I will put every effort in to get this done.

‘I’m not thinking about transfer windows because I have a good squad.#

The window opens again in January.
