October wasn’t GTA 6 reveal month (Picture: Hossein Diba)
The Wednesday letters page wonders if Sony consider 2023 a good year for PS5, as one reader completes Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

I’m going to guess that by the time you see this GTA 6 hasn’t been announced/had its first trailer, which is a bit of a shame. I think predicting it would be in October was 99.9% wishful thinking but at this point I do wish Rockstar would just lance the boil and reveal the thing properly and say when it’s coming out.
I agree that it being out in 2024 or 2025 seems the most likely, based on what Take-Two has been hinting at, but there’s a part of me that looks at how well GTA 5 is still doing and thinks that they won’t want to replace it until there’s some kind of decline in popularity.
But will that ever happen? We could be here in another 10 years, and another generation, and GTA 5 is still in the top 10. If they hadn’t admitted that it was in development I’d genuinely question whether they’ve even started work on GTA 6 yet. So yeah, what’s the next guess? A reveal sometime in February?

Behind the curtains
With all these stories about how well the PlayStation 5 is selling and how it’s completely dominating Xbox in France or whatever It made me think about how 2023 must seem from Sony’s perspective. While we’re all sitting here complaining about the lack of announcements Sony has been watching the console sales go through the roof and letting Square Enix and others make exclusives, so they don’t have to bother.
The one major game that did come out was Spider-Man 2 and that sold and reviewed really well, so if you’re an accountant at Sony I’m pretty sure you’d think of this as one of their best years ever.
I’m sure those in charge of the games would think differently though and the exit of Jim Ryan and whatever’s going on behind the scenes at the moment, with that exec getting fired and live service games, sounds pretty bad. I don’t think I’d like to be in a PlayStation boardroom right about now.
It’s certainly a strange year. On the surface it seems like everything is going perfect but under the surface, especially when you consider the renewed threat from Microsoft, it seems a lot less smooth sailing for PlayStation. Let’s see what 2024 is going to be like for them…
Focus
Legendary remake
I find it hard to imagine that Nintendo really does have another Zelda remaster to announce this year. Sure, they could wheel out The Wind Waker or Twilight Princess at a moment’s notice, because they were already on Wii U but it’s going to be November by the time you read this and I can’t remember anything ever coming out this late in the year without warning, even as a shadow drop.
What if he meant that it was going to be announced in 2023, and released whenever, and it’s actually a more substantial remake, not just a remaster. Maybe a remake of A Link To The Past or Ocarina Of Time? I’d be perfectly happy with either of those and I’m sure they’d sell. Also, it’s a good way to make a new old school Zelda, without it seeming weird that it’s not more like the last two games.

Multi-player Wonder
24 amazing hours and 20 glorious minutes later (parental controls is great to track game time). I have seen the end credits to Super Mario Bros. Wonder. And I absolutely loved every bit of it.
About halfway through, I started to go back and get hidden bits. So have ticked a lot of boxes. But there still looks to be a lot to do.
And I totally suck on the Special World.
That is only on my own single-player game. I have a separate three-player game with the kids (on World 3). And a four-player game for all the family (not off World 1 yet).
Replaying the levels with different numbers of players changes the dynamics of how bits work and certainly makes it hectic. And playing the levels again doesn’t get boring.
For me this will be one game that will be re-played a lot.

Nightmare job
All these layoffs at Bungie sound horrible. I haven’t played Destiny 2 in years, and perhaps that’s part of the problem, but I always assumed it did really well, but I guess not. Unless this is just Sony trimming what they seem as fat, which is something Microsoft is bound to do with Activision Blizzard too, to the tune of hundreds of jobs.
Like GC says, these things always go the same way. It’s not even because something’s gone wrong, it’s just all part of the plan. It’s how acquisitions are funded and what they expect to happen after it’s done.
Still, it comes as a bad time, with all the other job cuts, which suddenly makes being a video games developer seem like a really risky occupation. I never would’ve imagine that and for once I’m glad I’m not doing what at one point I would’ve considered a dream job.

Teenagers only
Pedants corner here, just wanting to point out a slight error in your Five Nights At Freddy’s film article… It’s not a PG in either the UK or US market. In the US it’s a PG-13, nearest equivalent is to our 12a in that anyone can go and see it but that 13 or over is recommended. In the UK it’s a 15 certificate – two ratings higher than PG and unlike the 12a there is no leniency on age – meaning you must be 15 or over to see it.
Just thought it worth clarifying to ensure people know before taking young ones to the cinema potentially on the back of that article. For more info on why it’s rated as it is check out BBFC.
The team at BBFC are very considered in their ratings, not like the bad old days of video nasties, and most of the time are very good in their ratings.
Have fun y’all!

The Kojima problem
Why is it I get the feeling Konami are building up to making a brand new Metal Gear game? I can see David Hayter re-recording Keifer Sutherland’s lines but it seems to me like Konami are realising how much money they’re leaving on the table but not having new games as well.
If this was any other franchise that was that famous we’ve be getting a new sequel or spin-off every year but of course you’ve got the Hideo Kojima problem. I get the feeling Konami have decided to just ignore it and making a new game away. I feel sorry for whatever poor soul is going to be doing that, once the internet gets hold of them.

Stay out of trouble
The first website I check every day is GC, as you are my most trusted source for reviews and news (plus I love the Inbox), so imagine my delight when RoboCop: Rogue City gets a 7?! Unfathomable. RoboCop is probably my favourite film.
It is, as GC states in the Rogue City review, nearly perfect (I actually think it is perfect) but when I pre-ordered Rogue City I imagined it getting a 4 and reading along the lines of ‘fans will get something out of it but what did you expect, it’s a licensed game’ and it evidently isn’t that. I now massively regret telling my partner she can put it away as my Christmas present.
I also now want a RoboCop Versus Terminator remake; if Rogue City sells then who knows? I’d buy that for RRP on release (come on, a RoboCop letter has to include a spin on that).
And GC, for all of the peerless content you provide, especially the RoboCop: Rogue City review, thank you for your cooperation.

Currently replaying: Metroid: Zero Mission – on hard for the first time, an absolute classic. Then I’ll stare at a wall until Christmas or I’ll finally start Vanquish. Yeah, that seems more sensible.
GC: Sir, you have suffered an emotional shock. We will notify Father Christmas.

Benny was Chandler? I had no idea at all and listening to the clips I don’t think it was my fault for not realising.

I’m so glad that FromSoftware got bought by some Japanese company before they could be snapped up by Microsoft or Sony. You know they must’ve been number one on their hit list.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Danse, who asks what franchise or genre have you changed your opinion on over time?
Not every game or concept can grab you straight away, but are there any that grew on you over time? Similarly, is there any that you used to enjoy but have now grown tired of?
What caused the change and did it happen suddenly, with just one game or experience, or gradually over the time, following multiple sequels and similar games? Is there anything in the future that you think could change your mind again?
