Chelsea made £23m bid for winger wanted by 20 different clubs

Chelsea reportedly had a £23m deadline day bid rejected by Club Brugge for winger Antonio Nusa, who has attracted interest from 20 different clubs.

The Blues were keen to bring in the 18-year-old but did not return with a second offer as they needed to offload Ian Maatsen or Conor Gallagher – who were linked to Burnley and Tottenham respectively – but both men remained in west London.

Chelsea are continuing to monitor Nusa but according to reports, they will face increased competition to sign the Norwegian in future transfer windows as he is now being tracked by ‘at least’ 20 other clubs.

Nusa joined Belgian side Club Brugge in 2021 – making 46 appearances to date – and he became the second-youngest goalscorer in Champions League history last September after scoring in a 4-0 win over Porto.

The Blues were the biggest spenders this summer and splashed out £434.5m, the most spent by any club during a transfer window in Premier League history, but that did not stop their late attempts to land Nusa.

Chelsea smashed the British transfer record to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton and also brought in Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic as well as Brazilian duo Deivid Washington and Angelo.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer, is looking to turn the club’s fortunes around after their abysmal 12th-placed finish in the top-flight last term.

It has been a rough start for the Argentine with Chelsea having won just one of their four Premier League games so far this season.

They drew at home to Liverpool in their first match and beat Luton Town after a costly defeat at West Ham, but then lost at Stamford Bridge to Nottingham Forest.

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf recently singled out four players for criticism amid the club’s slow start to the 2023-24 campaign.
