The late Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t just another queen – or any old monarch – she was, around the world, known as THE Queen.
An icon in territories across the globe, having reigned for a historic 70 years meant that the late Queen was one constant uniting different generations.
This is perhaps why her death on September 8, 2022, sent shockwaves around the world – despite the fact a 96-year-old woman dying shouldn’t have felt entirely unexpected.
The late Queen’s state funeral was watched by millions and many will be thinking of her as we approach the first anniversary of her passing.
Being such a monumental figure, will the date of her passing become a bank holiday?
Will September 8 be a bank holiday?
No, there are no plans to mark the date of the Queen’s death as a public holiday.
We did, however, get a bank holiday for her state funeral on September 19, 2022.

But it wont be an annual bank holiday, it was a one-off, similar to the extra bank holiday the nation enjoyed on Monday, May 8 this year for the Coronation of King Charles.
Despite there being no plans to make a new bank holiday in honour of the late Queen, there is a petition arguing for that very thing.
The Change.Org page reads: ‘Queen Elizabeth II is our longest reigning Monarch, and arguably the Nations, and the World’s most popular ever Monarch. In the words of President Macron, “to you, she was your Queen, to us, she was THE Queen…The most constant symbol of Great Britain.”’

It currently has over 159,000 signatures, but that doesn’t really mean a bank holiday will be approved any time soon.
So, if you’re feeling sad and want to remember the late monarch, you’ll have to remember her ‘privately and quietly’ – just like King Charles is expected to do so.
