West Ham set to sign former Arsenal star Konstantinos Mavropanos after failed Harry Maguire move

West Ham are on the verge of signing former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos in a transfer worth £17million plus add-ons.

The Irons turned to Mavropanos after their pursuit of Manchester United outcast Harry Maguire collapsed last week.

The two clubs had agreed a £30m fee for the 30-year-old, but he is refusing to leave Old Trafford despite sliding way down the pecking order and with a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad at stake.

However, West Ham have moved on quickly from that disappointment and have swiftly secured the signature of Stuttgart centre-back Mavropanos who will move to the London Stadium for £17m with just over £4m worth of add-ons.

There were rumours on Monday night that the deal had fallen through because the 25-year-old had failed his medical, but they were unfounded and the move is set to be announced very soon.

Mavropanos knows the Premier League pretty well having previously been on Arsenal’s books from 2018 to 2022 and one of Arsene Wenger’s final ever signings.

He would only make eight appearances for the Gunners however and spent the last two seasons of his spell with them on loan at Stuttgart before completing a permanent move to Germany last summer.

Arsenal are set to pocket 10% of his transfer fee – around £1.7m – as a result of a sell-on clause in his contract.

The Greek international will become David Moyes’ third signing of the summer following midfield arrivals Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse, as his side look to better their standing in the Premier League and compete in the Europa League.

After a rather turbulent summer, West Ham have made a good start to the new season, with an away point at Bournemouth followed by an impressive 3-1 win against London rivals Chelsea.

Up next for the Irons is a trip to top of the table Brighton on Saturday evening.
