The popularity of women’s football has grown immeasurably in recent years – and that popularity will continue to grow despite England losing in the final of the Women’s World Cup 2023.
And the growth of the game has been reflected by millions of people around the globe tuning in to watch the Women’s World Cup 2023, which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
One theme of this year’s tournament was the narrowing of the gap between the established sides and those with less of a pedigree in the women’s game.
That competitiveness is only expected to grow by the time the next edition of the Women’s World Cup comes around in 2027, where England will be looking to avenge Sydney’s heartbreak.

However, FIFA has announced that four bids have confirmed their interest in hosting the tournament.
Belgium, Germany, and Netherlands have joined together on one ticket such is their geographical proximity.
Likewise, the USA and America, who are hosting the 2026 edition of the men’s World Cup alongside Canada, have also joined forces.
The final two bids are from Brazil and South Africa respectively.
How many teams will be in the Women’s World Cup 2027?
A total of 32 teams will contest the Women’s World Cup in four years’ time – the same as this year’s tournament.

The current 2023 edition represents the first time that 32 teams have been involved in the Women’s World Cup, with the last two featuring only 24 sides and even fewer in previous years.
The format is an exact mirror of that used in the men’s World Cup since 1998.
All six confederations will be represented at the finals.
What edition will Women’s World Cup in 2027?
The Women’s World Cup 2027 will be the tenth edition of the competition.
The very first one took place in China in 1991 with the United States emerging as the winners.
That was the very first tournament to be granted official status by FIFA, with several unofficial World Cups held from 1970 onwards.
