Princess Charlotte sends sweet ‘good luck’ message to Lionesses before World Cup final

Princess Charlotte has wished the Lionesses the best of luck in an adorable video ahead of the Women’s World Cup final.

England take on Spain after securing their place in the Sydney showpiece match following their 3-1 victory over hosts Australia in the semi-final.

Excitement is building ahead of the highly-anticipated contest on Sunday, which will mark the first ever World Cup final for the England women’s team.

And now the Prince of Wales and his daughter have sent a message of support.

In a short clip filmed sitting next to her father Prince William while clutching a football, Charlotte says: ‘Good luck Lionesses!’

Prince William, who is the president of the Football Association, has apologised for not flying out to Sydney to watch the game and cheer on the Lionesses in person.

He said: ‘Lionesses, I want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow.

‘We’re sorry we can’t be there in person but we’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world.

‘So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves.’

Before today’s video, Prince William has been criticised from some quarters for opting to stay at home.

Loose Women star Coleen Nolan questioned why he won’t be jetting over to see the team make history again – he was in attendance for the Euro 2022 victory.

On Thursday’s episode of the lunchtime programme, the panel were discussing the semi-final win before conversation turned to whether or not any Royals would be attending.

‘I don’t think it’s a thing of whether he should be there. I don’t care if he is,’ Coleen said.

‘The only thing I care about is, I just think if it was the men’s final he would be there. I definitely think he would be there.

‘This discussion of Australia it’s a bit far, I think he’d be there if it was the men’s,’ she added.

It is understood he is currently on a summer break and made the decision not to travel because a trip to Australia would involve flying across the world for a very short period of time.

He did also throw his support behind the team in a message from his and Kate Middleton’s joint social media pages after the semi-final victory.

It read: ‘What a phenomenal performance from the @Lionesses – on to the final!

‘Commiserations to @TheMatildas, you’ve played brilliantly and been fantastic co-hosts of this World Cup.’

King Charles also released a statement celebrating England’s advancement to the finals following the game.

Referring to Queen Camilla, he said: ‘My wife and I join all our family in sending the mighty Lionesses our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the World Cup, and in sharing our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

‘While your victory may have cost the magnificent Matildas their chance for the greatest prize in the game, both teams have been an inspiration on and off the pitch — and, for that, both nations are united in pride, admiration and respect.’

The game will kick off at 11am UK time – and here is everything you need to know about it.
