A BBC reporter has shared the news of the safe arrival of his baby after missing the World Cup.

BBC Sports reporter Matt Graveling has been working for the national broadcaster for the past decade but has explained the important reason why he missed out on watching and reporting on the Lioness’ historic World Cup semi-final win against Australia on Wednesday.

Posting on social media, he revealed that he’d welcomed his ‘miracle IVF baby’.

‘It’s not often @BBCSport reporters miss England in a World Cup Semi final but my future Lioness had other ideas!’ he shared.

‘Our little IVF miracle arrived seconds after @ellatoone99 smashed in the opener and so managed to watch the 2nd half 😅.’

He then went on to congratulate the national team, adding: ‘@Lionesses you have a new fan for the final!’

Sharing two photos, one showed Matt in a hospital robe and head cover cradling his daughter, while a second picture was of his little girl in her hospital cot with his mobile phone showing the Lionesses’ World Cup semi-final playing next to her.

His colleagues offered their congratulations, with BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty tweeting: ‘Fantastic win(s) for you!!! Congratulations! xx.’

Jon Kay added: ‘Massive congratulations. That’s fantastic.’

BBC News anchor Rita Chakrabarti also commented: ‘How lovely, many congratulations Matt!’

Following the Lioness’ win, many famous faces also offered their congratulations to the team ahead of their game against Spain on Sunday.

Shortly after the semi-final finished, Holly Willoughby wrote on Instagram: ‘Utterly incredible… wow wee! Congratulations @lionesses.’

Meanwhile, Carol Vorderman tweeted: ‘Sweet Caroline. A great day for women Congratulations Lionesses. And Congratulations to the Matildas. All of you, how you enjoy yourselves how you give an inspiration to all young girls. When I was your age we couldn’t ever have dreamed of these times. It’s wonderful.’

King Charles and Queen Camilla also shared their ‘warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the World Cup’ and shared their ‘very best wishes’ for the upcoming match this weekend.
