Tyrone Mings set for up to seven months out after ‘significant’ knee injury sustained against Newcastle

Aston Villa are set to be without defender Tyrone Mings for the majority of the campaign after they confirmed he suffered a ‘significant’ knee injury against Newcastle.

Mings was left in agonising pain during the first half after battling for a 50-50 with Alexander Isak.

The England defender was clearly in distress as play continued, despite the innocuous nature of the collision.

Mings had to be stretchered off, with Villa fans fearing the worst after Emi Buendia sustained an ACL tear earlier this month.

And Villa have now confirmed the bad news, with Mings set for up to seven months on the sidelines as he requires surgery.

‘Aston Villa can confirm that Tyrone Mings has sustained a significant knee injury,’ a statement read.

‘The England international was stretchered off from the field after damaging his knee during the first half of Villa’s match at Newcastle United on Saturday.

‘The defender has undergone scans and will unfortunately require surgery ahead of a lengthy rehabilitation process.’

Villa signed Pau Torres in a £45m deal earlier this summer, with Unai Emery planning to pair the Spaniard with Mings.

However, the club may now move into the market for a new defender given Mings is likely to miss a large chunk of the campaign.

Captain John McGinn says losing Mings is a huge blow but there’s ‘no excuses’ for Villa this season.

‘Tyrone is a huge player for us,’ said the Scot.

‘A leader. After losing Emi [Buendia], it is a bitter bow and we are keeping our fingers crossed for him. It is devastating to see him like that.

‘Pau [Torres] comes in, we’ve spent a lot of money to recruit him, and we have no excuses.’
