Bayern Munich confirm signing of England captain Harry Kane from Tottenham

Harry Kane has completed his highly-anticipated transfer from Tottenham to Bayern Munich for a fee upwards of €100million (£86.4m).

The England captain has signed a four-year contract with the Bundesliga giants, bringing to an end perhaps the biggest transfer saga of the summer.

As his contract was due to expire next year, Kane was always largely expected to leave his beloved boyhood club, with the formidable striker up for a new challenge and motivated by the desire to finally win silverware.

Though he had hoped to help end Spurs’ own trophy drought, the turmoil the club have found themselves in since the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino in 2019 meant that not even new, exciting manager Ange Postecoglou could persuade him to stay.

Interest in the 30-year-old was unsurprisingly high, with Manchester United initially leading the race for his signature ahead of Real Madrid and PSG.

However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had little intention to sell his talisman, despite the risk of losing him for nothing in 12 months, and even less desire to sell him to a Premier League rival.

That lead to United dropping out and clearing the way for Bayern, who saw several bids rejected before an offer was finally accepted on the eve of the new season.

Even then, it seemed as if Kane would U-turn and stay in north London after all, before deciding to make the move, with Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel crucial in persuading the Three Lions superstar to come to Germany.

Kane made his Tottenham debut in 2011 and after a series of loans broke into the first-team in 2014, and has since established himself as one of the greatest strikers of his generation.

He helped the Lilywhites reach two League Cup finals and the 2019 Champions League final and has won countless individual awards including three Premier League Golden Boots.

He found the back of the net 280 times in 435 appearances, surpassing Jimmy Greaves to become the club’s all-time record goalscorer earlier this year.

Kane is also England’s all-time top scorer – a feat he also achieved in 2023 – and has captained his country since 2018, leading them to the semi-final of that year’s World Cup, winning the tournament’s Golden Boot in the process, and the final of Euro 2020.
