William Gallas has poured doubt over new Chelsea signing Axel Disasi, saying he is not ready to play at the top level and will not suit a club like the Blues.
The 25-year-old defender arrived at Stamford Bridge last week after completing a £38.5m move from Monaco, where he spent the previous three seasons after signing from Reims.
Disasi was part of the France squad which reached the World Cup final in Qatar and has won four caps for his country, but Gallas is clearly not the biggest fan of his compatriot.
The former Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham defender cannot see why the Blues spent big on Disasi, partly because they already have enough centre-backs, but chiefly because he does not think he is good enough.
‘I’ve seen him play for Monaco and, for me, I don’t know why Chelsea signed another defender. I think they have too many – it looks like they have too many, so why sign another one?’ Gallas told Gambling Zone.
‘Disasi is a very physical player. He is very strong. In the Premier League you need to have more about you than just being a physical player – being strong is not enough, especially when you play for a big club like Chelsea. You need to have more quality and, I don’t think he is a player that will suit Chelsea.
‘I don’t think it was a good idea to sign him because I don’t think he is ready to play at the top level yet.’
Mauricio Pochettino does have a number of centre-backs at his disposal, although he has been hampered by injury to Wesley Fofana.
Nevertheless, Disasi will be competing with Benoit Badiashile, Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill in the middle of defence, even while Fofana is out.
