France 4-0 Morocco: Dominant France set up last-8 clash with Australia
France have cruised into the 2023 Women’s World Cup quarter-finals with a convincing 4-0 win over Morocco to set up a last-8 match against tournament co-hosts Australia.
Eugenie Le Sommer scored twice and Kadidiatou Diani and Kenza Dali also found the back of the net.
France were 3-0 ahead before halftime, with the final goal coming in the 70th minute.
France now face the Matildas in the last-8 in Brisbane on Saturday.
Morocco had hoped to become the first African nation to win a knockout match in the Women’s World Cup.
France is 67 places above Morocco in Fifa’s world rankings and their quality was evident from the get-go.
It has however been a tournament of shocks – four-time World Cup winners USA knockout in the Round of 16, Germany, Brazil and Italy out in the groups and England struggled to survive a game against Nigeria.
Many had hoped we might see another shock – a final twist in the Round of 16. But whilst France were dominant, they will need to step it up for their match against Australia on Saturday.
Only a handful of Fifa’s top 10 teams remain in the competition, highlighting one very exciting fact: the women’s game is continuing to grow globally.
France’s best Women’s World Cup result is fourth place in 2011, they’ll be looking to go all the way this time.
If France do beat Australia in the last-8 they will face the winner of the England vs Colombia game.
