When planning a trip, it’s pretty common to carve out time for sightseeing during the daylight hours.

However, if this is how you typically make holiday plans, you could be missing out on some pretty scenic views.

That’s because certain cities come alive when the sun goes down.

In fact, the top 10 picturesque cities at night have been named by the long-haul travel specialists at Travelbag.

The experts have selected the top spots by collating the number of Instagram hashtags shared in each location, the level of light and noise pollution, and how safe each location is to walk around at night.

Dubai tops the list as the most picturesque spot at night – but it’s Japan that dominates the top 10 overall. Three cities in Japan feature within the rankings – with Tokyo coming in second, Hiroshima in sixth, and Kyoto in seventh position.

Singapore, Muscat and New York also place within the top five for the global rankings.

The Travelbag team have also named the best within Europe, with Reykjavik scooping the top spot, followed by Dubrovnik in second and Helsinki at third.

The top 10 most picturesque cities in Europe at night:

    Reykjavik, Iceland
    Dubrovnik, Croatia
    Helsinki, Finland
    Vienna, Austria
    Zagreb, Croatia
    San Sebastian, Spain
    Munich, Germany
    Vilnius, Lithuania
    Madrid, Spain
    Lisbon, Portugal
