Musician Paul Heaton is paying for drinks for TRNSMT festival-goers as a ‘thank you’ to supporters.

The Beautiful South and House Martins musician is performing at the Scottish festival this weekend, alongside the likes of Pulp, The 1975, Sam Fender and Niall Horan.

Celebrating the festival kicking off – and giving a ‘small amount of help’ to those struggling as everything becomes more expensive thanks to inflation, Paul has now paid for drinks for fans preparing to enter the TRNSMT grounds.

He explained he was doing so to combat ‘the cost of greed crisis,’ an obvious play on the incredibly depressing phrase we hear so much now, the cost of living crisis.

In a statement to social media, he wrote: ‘Glasgow, as a thank you, and a small amount of help during the cost of greed crisis, Paul is leaving some money behind the bar at a few local pubs near to TRNSMT festival so that some of you can have a drink on him tomorrow afternoon.’

He added it would last ‘until the money runs out, or the bar runs dry!’

Multiple pubs in Glasgow have benefitted from Paul’s gift: 226 Gallowgate, The Old Burnt Barns, Lynch’s Bar, The Braemar Bar, The Tolbooth Bar and Whistler on the Green.

He said he chose the venues as they ‘were the nearest ones,’ but got lucky as ‘they all look like good friendly pubs.’

Paul has been showered with praise from fans for the incredible gesture, with one declaring him a ‘legend’ and another a ‘top bloke.’

‘What a guy,’ one Scottish fan wrote, another agreeing he was an ‘absolute legend.’

‘Paul is so generous, sure that will be appreciated by many,’ one said.

The gates to TRNSMT 2023 have now opened, with Paul and the band set to perform at 4.25pm on the main stage.

(And we reckon there’ll be a few grateful fans there who have availed from his gesture.)

Also set to perform on Friday are headliners Pulp, along with George Ezra, former One Direction star Niall, Cat Burns, The Big Moon and more.
