Steven Gerrard named manager of Saudi Pro League Al-Ettifaq

Steven Gerrard has been named as manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. 

Gerrard, 43, said in June that he had been invited to Saudi to “look at ta potential offer” but that he would not be taking it up. 

“Without a doubt, Gerrard’s presence will be an addition and a quantum leap to our league,” said Khalid Al-Dabal, the club’s chairman.

Former Liverpool and England player Steven Gerrard has signed a two-year contract with the Saudi club. 

Al-Ettifaq finished seventh in the 16-team Saudi Pro League last season, finishing 35 points behind champions Al-Ittihad. 

Gerrard was sacked by Aston Villa in October last year. 

He is the latest to make the move to Saudi Arabia following a heavy investment by Pro League clubs. Many older players looking to leave Europe are making the move to Saudi clubs. Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Ruben Neves, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy have all joined the league. Whilst the American league MSL has gained Lionel Messi, who’s looking to slow down his career before retirement.
