New Liverpool signing Dominik Szoboszlai says Steven Gerrard inspired him to take the number 8 shirt, with the Hungarian sporting a quote from the Reds legend as a tattoo.
The 22-year-old has arrived at Anfield from RB Leipzig in a £60m deal, becoming the second major signing of the season for Liverpool after Alexis Mac Allister was snapped up from Brighton.
The Hungarian will wear the iconic number 8 shirt which has been vacated by Naby Keita who left at the end of last season, but was famously worn for years by Reds captain Gerrard.
Szoboszlai says the former England midfielder was one of the standout players for him growing up, so much so that he has tattooed a quote from Gerrard on his body.
‘Not a special reason but of course it’s a great number, a lot of great players had this number. And also I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard, what he said – I don’t even remember when but before. It was also a reason why,’ said the attacking midfielder.
‘When I was a child, to be honest I didn’t watch that much football, but when it was Champions League, I watched and he was one of the biggest.’
The tattoo, in Hungarian, reads: ‘Talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it is worth nothing.’
On what Liverpool fans can expect from him, the Hungary international added: ‘I’m a player who can play box to box; quite fast but not the fastest as I see the players here. I have quite a good shot. But I’m not only me, it’s the team, so I’m looking forward [to that].’
On his best position, he said: ‘For me it doesn’t matter – I want to be on the pitch. But of course everybody has their own position. Of course, attacking midfielder as a 10, I can play on both 10s, left, right, on the sides also. Just I want to play.’
