Nintendo Switch 2 being as powerful as PS4 will destroy Xbox and PS5 – Reader’s Feature

Is the next Switch a guaranteed hit? (Picture: Nintendo)

A reader reacts to rumours that the Switch is almost as powerful as the PS4 and predicts another major success for Nintendo.

I don’t know how anyone else imagined the Switch 2 would finally be revealed but I don’t think they would’ve imagined it’d be via a passing comment from the head of Activision. He didn’t say what it would look like but he did reveal one of the most important details possible: that it will be roughly as powerful as a PlayStation 4. Which is what I’d hoped for but was not at all confident of happening.

I’m sure there’ll be plenty of strange things about the Switch in terms of how it looks and controls but knowing that one basic fact is hugely exciting. Considering what Nintendo has been able to do with Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, just imagine what they could do on hardware that can make games that look as good as The Last Of Us Part 2 or Horizon Forbidden West!

It’s not just a case of Nintendo games looking better though, it will enable third party publishers to put all their games on the Switch 2. Not just anything that came out in the last generation but probably version of anything from this generation too. Because, let’s face it, apart from a few technical details they barely look or play any differently.

Nintendo don’t have a great track record in following up successful consoles, with the Wii U being the worst follow-up imaginable to the Wii. You’d assume they’ve learnt their lesson with that but while you should assume nothing about Nintendo let’s at least give them that. So, the imagined set-up is a console similar to the Switch but which can run almost any game from the last 10 years and many in the future too.

We’ve already seen how popular a powerful handheld can be with the Steam Deck but imagine what a more user-friendly, cheaper version will be like with the added bonus of Nintendo games on top. It is going to blow the current stagnation – as I see it – in the games industry wide open and I think Sony and Microsoft are going to end up seriously regretting that they didn’t invest in their own hybrid console.

I’m extremely surprised that as soon as the Switch was a hit that they didn’t both start work on their own equivalents, as that’s certainly what they did when the Wii made motion controls popular. In fact, they usually copy everything, from shoulder buttons to analogue sticks, so it’s a bit of puzzler. Perhaps they were burned because they were very quick to copy the Wii U, in terms of trying to use tablets with games, and that didn’t work out.

Whatever the reason, their lack of action has meant that Nintendo have an open field to play in and I think they’re going to kill it. Their release schedules slowing down shows they must have plenty of new games in reserve and they can release the thing any time next year without worrying about clashing with anything else. Plus, they can sell upgrades of all their current games to run in 60fps or whatever (I know, it’d be better if it were free, but this is Nintendo we’re talking about).

I really do think that the Switch 2, or whatever it ends up being called, is going to take things to new heights, that are going to very quickly make the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 seem like old hat. Microsoft and Sony might be waiting on game streaming to become viable, before they properly get into portable gaming, but Nintendo is already there with something that doesn’t rely on perfect Wi-Fi to work.

I think Nintendo is going to have to go to a lot of effort to make the new Switch a failure and while I’m sure they’re capable of doing exactly that I’m already super excited about the Switch 2, and it hasn’t even been announced yet.
