Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will return to the ring in September to take on undisputed super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo.
Canelo, who holds all four world titles at super-middleweight, was expected to put his undisputed crown on the line against Jermall Charlo, Jermell’s twin brother who reigns as WBC champion in the division above him at middleweight.
But in a shock twist, it has now been announced the Mexican superstar will be taking on Jermell, who will be moving up two weight classes to make history this autumn.
It marks the first time in the history of men’s boxing two undisputed champions have fought – with Canelo’s titles on the line on 30 September.
Canelo has twice defended his undisputed super-middleweight titles since collecting all four belts in 2021, beating John Ryder and Gennady Golovkin in his last two fights.
He previously fell short in a move up to light-heavyweight against Dmitry Bivol last May.
The 32-year-old had been eager to secure a rematch with the Russian but after those hopes faded, he signed a three-fight deal with PBC.

That deal took the biggest name in the sport away from rival promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom and opened the doors to the Charlo fight.
Jermell has reigned as world champion at 154lbs since 2016 when he became WBC champion.

In September 2020, he added the WBA, IBF and Ring Magazine belts with victory over Jeison Rosario before completing the collection by beating Brian Castano for the WBO strap in May 2022.
His brother Jermall has been inactive for over two years, last fighting in June 2021 when he defended his WBC middleweight title against Juan Macias Montiel.
Jermell himself has been recovering from a serious hand injury that saw his mandatory title defence against Tim Tszyu earlier this year postponed.
