A former Coronation Street cast member narrowly avoided jail time after he pleaded guilty to careless driving that resulted in serious injuries for two young girls.

Louis Emerick Grant was widely known for this role as Mike Thornberry in 2018 – Steve and Andy McDonald’s former teacher.

In the aftermath of his inconsiderate driving, he was accused of injuring two 12-year-old girls as they attempted to cross a road.

The 64-year-old ex-soap star was out in his Honda driving around Wallasey, Wirral on October 2 of last year when he hit the two teenagers, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

At the time of the accident, the two girls were said to have been crossing the road to get to the shop on the other side.

Louis’s car was then seen to cut the corner of the right-hand bend before colliding with the girls, according to The Mirror.

The publication went on to note that one girl suffered a fractured leg while the second was left with a fractured leg and ankle, a broken jaw nose and smashed teeth.

They both spent ample time in Alder Hey hospital following which they will still require further surgery and have missed considerable amounts of school days.

Claiming he looked and did not see the girls due to the sun shining into his car, the star was not seen to slow down at any point and said his prescription glasses reacted to the light.

He has since apologised for his fault in the accident and has been fully cooperative throughout the duration of the investigation.

He was breathalysed at the scene and there was said to have been no evidence of alcohol or drugs in his system or that he had been using his mobile phone while driving.

District Crown Prosecutor Linda Melia, of CPS Mersey Cheshire, reportedly explained: ‘This was an extremely distressing incident and the two girls suffered serious injuries as a result of what happened on that day.

‘Louis Emerick Grant was not speeding but admitted that he couldn’t see clearly because of the sun so he should have slowed down. The sun visor of the car was not down.

‘He has been fully cooperative and remorseful throughout the investigation and has apologised on numerous occasions. He has been in contact with both families and has apologised to them too. He tested negatively at the roadside for drink and drugs.

‘When we drive a car we are in control of something powerful that, if we lose concentration or clear vision for a minute, can cause serious injury, even death.

‘It’s clear Mr Grant did not mean to injure these girls, but the events of that day are a lesson that, when we are at the wheel of a car, care and attention are needed at all times.’
