A grieving dog owner has left a big box of their dog Rex’s old tennis balls up for grabs with a note saying passers-by are free to take them.

The box has been left on Exmouth beach, Devon, where the dearly departed Rex used to love to go.

The tear-jerking note says: ‘The goodest of good boys.

    ‘Rex loved the beach.

    ‘Rex loved the ball.

‘Please feel free to take a ball for your dog and I hope you all enjoy this place as much as we did.

    Oh, Rex (Picture: Jam Press)

‘Rex, sleep well my ginger prince.’

The note was written on a whiteboard next to a photo of a very happy-looking Rex staring sweetly at the camera.

People have praised the thoughtfulness of the owner, and, of course, paid tribute to lovely Rex.

A Devon County Council spokesperson said it was ‘a lovely gesture on Exmouth beach.’

‘Peaceful journey over the rainbow bridge Rex,’ said Counsellor Linda Mussell.

Another beach-goer said: ‘I’m not crying, you’re crying.’
