What Thierry Henry has said about Chelsea star and Arsenal transfer target Kai Havertz

Arsenal fans appear split over Mikel Arteta’s decision to target a move for Chelsea’s Kai Havertz, but club legend Thierry Henry sees shades of one of the best players of the Emirates Stadium era in the Germany international.

The Gunners are expected to return with an improved offer for the Bayer Leverkusen forward, who has been a divisive figure at Stamford Bridge following his £72million move from Bayer Leverkusen three years ago.

While Havertz’s name will always be etched into Chelsea folklore given his winning goals in the finals of the Champions League and Club World Cup, he has frustrated a succession of managers who have struggled to get the best out of him on a consistent basis.

Whether it be as a false nine, out on the flanks or a conventional No.10, Havertz has rarely threatened to establish himself as a consistent fixture in one position under the likes of Frank Lampard, twice, Thomas Tuchel or Graham Potter.

Havertz gave arguably one of his best ever performances in a Chelsea shirt in what turned out to be one of the final games of Potter’s ill-fated reign when his two goals helped the Blues reach the quarter finals of last season’s Champions League.

Chelsea trailed Borussia Dortmund following a narrow first leg defeat, but Havertz capped a fine overall performance leading the line with a decisive second half penalty.

Aside from his composure from the spot. Henry was taken by Havertz’s hold-up play which he insisted reminded him of Robin van Persie during his prime.

He told CBS Sports at the time: ‘I thought he was good on the first goal you could see held the ball ever so well.

Chelsea respond to Arsenal’s shock transfer offer for Kai Havertz

‘He reminds me sometimes, a little, of Robin back to goal the way he can hold the ball. Robin van Persie was very good with his left foot, the touch was always immaculate he tried to bring people along.

‘This is why out of the guys that used to be wingers or No.10 he plays as a nine because with his his back to goal he can hold the ball well.

‘Now he needs to make sure he can transform that into more goals because you can play off him.’
