Would you let your mum set up your dating profile?

When you really think about it, dating profiles are kind of weird.

It’s essentially a little advert, except rather that selling food or car insurance, you’re selling yourself.

And while literally of millions of us have signed up to a dating app in our time, it in doesn’t mean we don’t cringe at the thought of some shameless self-pomo.

In fact, dating app Badoo found that a staggering 71% of us struggle to ‘sell ourselves’ on apps to find love.

A further 44% of us find building our profile embarrassing, and a third of us actually think that our family could do a better job of constructing our dating profiles.

So with that in mind, Badoo has launched its ‘Family-Approved’ features which allows our nearest and dearest to big up our ‘best bits’.

Getting a second opinion clearly means a lot to singles on their dating app journey, as over half (58%) would feel a confidence boost if someone they trust had helped them build their dating app profile.

Roughly the same amount of Brits said they would also be more likely to match with someone if they had been vouched for by a family member.

So what are these family-approved features and do we actually trust our loved ones not to do us dirty?

Firstly – much like the Tinder and Hinge verified badges – there is now a ‘family-approved’ badge that member can add to their profile to show they have been approved by a member of their chosen family.

But, if you need more proof than just a badge before you match with someone, singles can now also add a video clip to their profile featuring their family member giving them the green light.

Similar to Hinge’s prompts ‘my BFF’s reasons for why you should date me’ and ‘a friend’s review of me’, Badoo have also launched prompts which allow a single’s family members to share what they would say about them to a prospective match.

So, all that’s left is to chose which family or friend you want to big you up.

Not sure who to pick? Badoo’s research found that singles have the most faith in their siblings, as just under half (45%) agree that their brothers or sisters would say the nicest things about them on a dating app profile. While a quarter said they trusted their parent/guardian/parental figure to do so.

Joe Baggs, who appears on Gogglebox with his mum, has partnered with Badoo. He said: ‘I’ve got to admit that sometimes I do need a bit of help with my dating life – I genuinely find talking about myself really cringe and I never know what the best bits about me actually are.

‘The fact that my mum can now help me out and “approve” my profile means that I have a lot more confidence to sell myself and land connections – she knows me best and helps remind me that I’m a catch!’

His mum Lisa added: ‘Finally there’s a feature that proves “mother knows best!”

‘As a mum to an adult child, all I want is to be reminded that they still need me… and the Family-Approved feature does just that!

‘I am always looking out for my son, and what’s best for him – and I want him to feel confident in himself whilst he looks for love because he’s amazing. His future squeeze deserves the same too!’
