A video has been released showing the dramatic moment a driver smashed into the side of a police car after reaching almost twice the speed limit in a motorway chase.

Kane McLeod had a loaded gun in his Audi A7 when police spotted him speeding near the Darenth Interchange in Dartford, Kent, on the evening of April 10, 2021.

Officers gave chase and followed the car, which was fitted with cloned number plates, as it reached 135mph on the M20 coastbound.

A police car boxed in the 32-year-old after he stopped, but he rammed it onto the carriageway and sped off for a second time.

Dashcam footage shows the vehicle with heavily dented doors veering from lane to lane on the motorway, before turning into the junction five slip road at the very last second.

Officers finally arrested McLeod after bringing the Audi to a stop at the top of the road, near Aylesford in Kent.

Having struck a kerb and activated the airbags, McLeod tried to flee with a rucksack containing the gun, but he was tasered.

Maidstone Crown Court heard that a small amount of drugs were also discovered in the car.

Prosecutor Matthew Kirk told the court the 9mm automatic pistol was loaded with six bullets, though McLeod claimed he was taking it to Canterbury ‘under direction’.

The court was also told that the Derby resident had committed very similar offences three years before in Harrow, north-west London, ramming police cars and four other vehicles before being tasered and arrested.

In that case, which involved a black Mini rather than an Audi, police had found a knife and drugs.

McLeod was charged with possession of a firearm with intent to cause alarm or distress, possessing a firearm when prohibited for life, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and possession of cannabis.

He pleaded guilty to all the charges and was sentenced to to five years and 11 months in prison at Maidstone Crown Court last month.

McLeod was also disqualified from driving seven years and 10 months, and will be required to do an extended test once his ban elapses.

He was also sentenced for the London offences at the same hearing and was handed an additional two years and 10 months in jail.
