Manchester United are potentially only 90 minutes away from winning yet another FA Cup title in their illustrious history.

However, they will need to overcome favourites Manchester City this afternoon, who themselves are looking to win the treble and match United’s feat from 1998/99.

So, exactly how many time have Manchester United won the FA Cup and when was the last time they won the famous old competition?

Here is a look at at Manchester United’s FA Cup pedigree ahead of today’s final at Wembley.

How many times have Manchester United won the FA Cup?

Manchester United have won the FA Cup 12 times in their history.

This makes the Red Devils the second most successful team in the history of the FA Cup, only behind Arsenal with 14 victories in the competition.

Of these 12 titles, five of them came under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with the first arriving in 1990 and the last in 2004.

But United have not always had it their way in the final with the club having lost eight finals in the past, including most recently in 2018 against Chelsea.

Their total of 20 appearances is bettered only by Arsenal with 21.

Having won the FA Cup four times in the 1990s, the pace at which United has picked up the trophy has slowed in recent years with just two wins since the turn of the millennium.

When was the last time Manchester United won the FA Cup?

The last time Manchester United won the FA Cup was in 2016 with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Jason Puncheon had put The Eagles ahead with just 12 minutes left of normal time to leave them on the brink of a huge upset at the famous old stadium.

However, their lead only lasted three minutes with Juan Mata’s deflected volley flying past Wayne Hennessey to bring United level.

Despite a second yellow card for Chris Smalling in extra time, United edged into the lead through Jesse Lingard with ten minutes remaining until the dreaded penalty shootout.

United stood firm in the face of late Crystal Palace pressure to hand Louis van Gaal the only trophy of his tenure.

Despite the FA Cup triumph, the Dutchman was sacked as manager just two days later following an otherwise disappointing spell in the Old Trafford hot seat.

The win seven years ago is the only time the club have won the FA Cup at the new Wembley stadium, with their previous successes having arrived at the old Wembley and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
