Julian Nagelsmann ‘not being considered’ by Tottenham and club will not seek talks

Tottenham have distanced themselves from a move for former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann and will not seek talks with the German, according to reports.

The north London club parted company with Antonio Conte in March and have been conducting a low-key search for a new permanent manager since then.

Nagelsmann, who has already rejected a move to Chelsea, emerged as a potential option and was even encouraged to move to Spurs by mentor Ralf Rangnick.

Tottenham had approached the 35-year-old back in 2021, before he joined Bayern, and there was a feeling that the north Londoners would be presented with a free run at one of the most exciting young coaches in Europe.

But now The Evening Standard and others are reporting that Nagelsmann will not take over the reins at Spurs and they have not even held talks with the former RB Leipzig boss.

The German is well respected by Tottenham’s hierarchy but the club do not believe he is the right fit at this moment in time.

Spurs insist they have not met with Nagelsmann since sacking Conte nor do they intend to, with the club instead looking at other options.

There had been suggestions that Nagelsmann was not keen on the Tottenham job while there was no sporting director in place – with Fabio Paratici forced to resign recently and a replacement yet to be found – while Bayern are believed to be demanding a big fee to release him from his gardening leave.

With nearly two months having passed since Conte was sacked, Spurs’ protracted managerial hunt is already drawing comparisons with the farcical 72-day search for Jose Mourinho’s successor.

That ultimately resulted in the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo, who lasted just four months before being axed.

Tottenham had hoped to have a new manager installed before the end of the month, though that now looks increasingly unlikely, though the looming end of the season will present opportunities to speak to managers who are currently in work.

Feyenoord’s Arne Slot is thought to be high on Spurs’ shortlist of candidates, though he is currently focused on winning the Eredivisie – something he can achieve this weekend.

Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso are also contenders, as are former Spain boss Luis Enrique, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.
